Both games are available for free from August 15 through August 22. Note that snagging these deals requires an EGS account. While the games aren’t free forever, they will remain in a user’s downloads library forever once downloaded.

Hyper Light Drifter

Hyper Light Drifter from Heart Machine is an eclectic hodgepodge of styles, combining hack-n’-slash with Zelda-style exploration, puzzle-solving with challenging combat.

Along with making exploration worthwhile, even if only to see the lovingly crafted world, it also manages to tell an interesting story using very few words — hence the fact that we strongly recommended it when it first released.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a turn-based, squad-based strategy game based on a Swedish tabletop game.

It borrows elements of XCOM and Valkyria Chronicles, blending some real-time combat in with its turn-based structure, but it prioritizes stealth and careful placement as well. Mutant Year Zero sets itself apart further with a bizarre cast of animals trying to survive in a world ruined by human-made disasters.

While it’s sound effects leave something to be desired, we still found a lot to love about Mutant Year Zero back when it released last year.

Although there is only one free game on the store this week in the eclectic puzzle game, GNOG, it seems like Epic will return to its recent two games per week model, following on from last week’s offering of Alan Wake and For Honor, then Moonlighter and This War of Mine the week before that. Whether it continues that way remains to be seen, though.
